CAN in Automation (CiA) is the international users' and manufacturers' group for CAN (Controller Area Network). It was established in March 1992 and is based in Nuremberg, Germany. CiA provides an unbiased platform for the further development of CAN, promotes its adoption, and supports users of all three CAN generations (CAN CC, CAN FD, and CAN XL).
CiA members jointly develop specifications for various CAN application fields and actively support the international standardization of CAN-based solutions. With a special focus on welding and arc-cutting equipment, CiA and its members are developing a CANopen application profile to support the digitalization of manual welding and arc-cutting equipment. On the one hand, this simplifies the modularization of such equipment. On the other hand, it paves the way for integrating these devices into the cloud.
The nonprofit association offers seminars and conferences to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing. Additionally, CiA provides updates on the latest developments in CAN through its publications, including the CAN Newsletter, the CAN Community News (CCN) email service, and its website.
As of January 2025, CAN in Automation (CiA) had more than 742 member companies worldwide.
